Darting Around (Or, Why It May be Warmer, But Dublin Weather is Worse than New England Weather)

Yesterday's orientation adventures brought us to the  village of Howth, a seaside suburb of Dublin, to explore for the afternoon. In order to get there, we took the DART, the Dublin Area Rapid Transit, which is a train system that goes along the coast. This was quite the accomplishment, as moving through the streets and train stations in a snaking line of 50 people is slightly difficult. The town itself was quaint and picturesque, the Ireland we had been hoping to see. As we wandered to the water's edge on the fishing boat docks, we wished that we could stop in at one of the many seafood restaurants lining the street. The day was bright and sunny...

...for about 15 minutes. All of a sudden, an enormous gust of wind swept a squall of torrential rain toward us and we were stuck in a downpour. Luckily, it didn't last long and although we were all wet, we decided to hike up the cliffs that dominated the landscape of the town. The paths up the rocks offered stunning views, and the long walk up was worth it as we took in old ruins of houses and fields that tumbled over the ledges. Here are some pictures from the day!

Today was the last day of orientation and we were supposed to have a walking tour of historic Dublin, but due to the weather forecast it was canceled. I don;t think many people minded, though, after the hike in Howth yesterday followed by the walk to and from dinner last night (another trendy restaurant paid for by Champlain--I tried duck for the first time!). Instead, Hannah, Ian and I strolled through Saint Stephen's Green on the way home from the Academic Center, and we plan on resting up before heading out again to have one more night of fun before classes start! Here are a few pictures of Saint Stephen's:

P.S. I have found my Guinness substitute: Bulmer's an Irish cider. I love it!
